Great staff! Amazing visit!! And recommended to all my I was on the tour and our tour guide Emily was really funny and made the facts sound interesting I haven't been to Cave of the Winds since I was about 10, so when I took my husband to Colorado Springs to do the "tourist thing", I thought it would be kind of neat to do the Lantern Tour instead of the standard cave tour.

We were warned that it might be muddy and that children under 6 were not welcome. Our tour guide was about 17 and his idea of touring the cave was to practically run through small passageways, leave most of us behind and then tell us really HORRIBLE and cheesy ghost stories and attempt to scare us. The tour was very short--we spent the majority of the time trying to get our lanterns lit they were small jars of kerosene stuck in an old tin bucket that you held sideways. I expected to see really neat cave formations by candlelight, and get a little education about cave stuff, but there was really nothing on this tour.

The highlights were some stringy mold that grew in the cave from an Indian mummy and a small formation of stalagtites--and our guide most certainly had nothing more educational to say than "watch out, George's ghost is sneaking up on you! The lanterns provided almost no light and the floor was very slippery. Our guide also told us that if our lantern blew out there was no way for him to come back and light it, and that was probably the only thing he said which gave us chills, because without your light you couldn't see the floor in front of you, which was slippery and uneven.

If you have ever visited just about any cave before you will be dreadfully disappointed. The "tour" consists of the walk through the cave and the highlighting of the very, very few and small cave formations in this hole in a ground. The tour's purpose was mostly to talk about the history of the touring of the cave and point out the formations that used to be there and were already destroyed. If you are expecting to go in and actually see real cave formations, don't waste your time.

Literally this is a dead cave with two actual formations of any viewability and the rest were destroyed in past tours. The purpose of the whole operation is to separate you from your money like a carnival. When you start your tour you MUST have your photo taken. It is required. After the very sad tour where they point out a few very small and dead stalagmites and stalactites and two ribbons, you must wait to turn down the photos before you can walk out of the gate. First of all, you get threatened by the person walking you through the cave because if you touch anything in there you will be fined along with having you drivers license suspended for a year, no matter where you are from.

Then there's the cave I would highly recommend the tour, but the laser show was definitely a disappointment. Regarding the tour: I had not been to Cave of the Winds since I was very little and I wasn't sure it would live up to my expectations. Turns out it was the highlight of our trip to Manitou Springs! The wait was not too long; our tour departed about 30 minutes after purchasing our tickets.

Although we went on an off-season weekend, which I would recommend if you want to avoid massive crowds. I hear it gets incredibly busy on more popular dates and the wait times increase considerably. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Some of the people in our tour group were quite loud, but our guide spoke clearly enough for all of us to hear -- even over the echoing noise.

The temperature in the caves was pleasant, cool enough that you were comfortable and would only need a light jacket if that. The tour itself was very interesting and entertaining. The formations, lighting, and length of the tour were all great. It was especially entertaining when they turned off the lights at one point so that we could experience true "cave darkness" for a few moments. The tour consists of many winding, oddly shaped passages and dramatic lighting, which added an element of adventure. It was also very interesting to hear how the formations formed, the original discovery and expansion of the caves, and other such information provided by the guide.

I'm sure kids and adults alike would enjoy this tour. However, a word of advice: anyone with a bad back, claustrophobia, or who is very overweight or feeble might have a difficult time on this tour. There are many points where the pathways narrow to a tight squeeze or where you must duck down while walking, and there are plenty of opportunities to trip or hit your noggin if you are not paying attention!

There are also quite a few trips up and down stairs, some of which are fairly narrow and steep.

Journey Behind the Falls Information

It's nothing extreme, but it could be straining for certain people, so keep that in mind. Another insider note: When you first enter the cave, they ask each group traveling together to take a photo in an area designated. This is not optional. The mandatory photo has a two-fold purpose… first, they use this method to make sure everyone in the photos that entered the cave is accounted for upon exiting. Secondly, they offer prints of the photo for sale at the end of the tour.

The Cave of the Winds tour is OK, and probably not worth the cost of the tour itself. If you have been to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, you will be disappointed by this cave tour. Whereas Mammoth Cave is run by the National Park Service who does a great job , the Cave of the Winds is privately run and therefore their primary interest is to make a dollar or two.

If you don't mind spending some money on an OK tour for something to do in the Colorado Springs area, then you will be OK. But this definetly won't be the highlight of a Colorado Vacation. Wasn't really impressed with the rock formations at this cave. If you have kids who are afraid of tiny spaces and spiral staircases, I wouldn't recommend this site.

There were kids who were crying during the tour because of these. Save your money to use for a better cave attraction, this one's not worth your money.. Flights Vacation Rentals Restaurants Things to do. Manitou Springs. Profile JOIN. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers.
